Water and wine

Filed under: Eucharist, Liturgy, joy, mercy, poetry — kathryntherese at 12:24 pm on Monday, June 25, 2007

Always on the brink of drought and fruitlessness, we
reach with arms and hearts for
       water -
water to sustain, water to purify.
We know only this until
You look on us with love and reveal that You
are the Rock from which flows living water, and You say,
                        “Come to Me.”
And then You show that this water can
       flow deep within.

Cana’s drought of wine
might abrupt the feast, and Your time is not yet come, but
You are eager to give in full measure, pressed down,
              running over -
the water of our sustenance,
the water of our cleansing,
the water of our offering,
     becomes the richest wine,
                       the wine of celebration,
                        the wine of joy.
Because of the eagerness of Your love,
Your time, which has not yet come -
the glorious Feast, which is our eternal Wedding -
                    is NOW.

The Bridegroom is here.
Let us surrender with joy.

Beautiful. If this isn’t new, then I am embarrassed and apologize for not remembering it. I’ve been thinking lately of thirst, of how He it is Who was thirsty and thirsts still, yet it’s He Who gives to drink. Even His blood. As you say, water into wine.

Was Mary telling us as well, that the hour is Now? Interesting food for thought.

Lovely, lovely pulling together of everything, here.

You make surrender sound like it doesn’t require manacles and pillories and duct tape and lots and lots of crying and kicking against the goad.

No need to apologize - this is a newborn bit of verse, formed in my barely-awake moments this very morning. Some mornings are like that ;)

I may re-work or rewrite, but it seemed enough to share here and ponder this life-giving water…

Lady, far be it from me to argue with a woman, but it would be like re-working a gazelle. This is more than words.

Drop by drop, you’ve installed us at Cana. I feel like a city girl onlooker whose heart just jumped at the look exchanged between the two of These seemingly from the outskirts, here at a wedding that pulls together the rich, the poor, the halt, blind and otherwise stumblish.
